Trump Unloads On New Mitt Romney Book: ‘Is, & Always Has Been, A Lightweight Joke!’
Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) is a “joke” who’s quitting politics because he couldn’t secure an endorsement from Donald Trump, asserts the former U.S. president.
Trump targeted Romney, 76, on Monday amid the release of the Utah senator’s autobiography, Romney: A Reckoning, which the 45th president says omits important details.
“Mitt Romney, a total loser that only a mother could love, just wrote a book which is, much like him, boring, horrible, and totally predictable,” Trump said on Truth Social.
Trump took credit for destroying Romney’s political career, saying, “I am very proud to be the one who forced this Left Leaning RINO out of politics. He wanted to run sooo badly, but knew he couldn’t win in the great State of Utah without my Endorsement and Support, so he QUIT.”
Trump said Romney’s book gives an unfair, negative portrayal of everyone — except former House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.).
“His crummy book says nothing good about anybody, other than RINO Paul RINO, who may be worse, and even dumber, than Mitt himself,” Trump said.
The 45th president and current GOP frontrunner went on to question whether the book mentions his meeting with Romney in Nov. 2016, when he met with Trump to discuss possibly becoming Secretary of State in his new administration. The meeting garnered significant media attention as up until then Romney held a “never-Trump” stance. The job was eventually given to former Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson instead of Romney.
“Does he mention his late night dinner with me at Trump International Hotel when he begged to be Secretary of State, then giving GLOWING COMMENTS about DJT at a follow up News Conference? I didn’t give him the job, NOR DID I EVER INTEND TO. I JUST WANTED TO PROVE A POINT, THAT MITT ROMNEY IS, & ALWAYS HAS BEEN, A LIGHTWEIGHT JOKE!”
The ex-president’s criticisms follow the Utah senator’s appearance on CBS Sunday Morning over the weekend, where he took a parting jab at the ex-president, saying, “Donald Trump represents a failure of character, which is changing…in many respects, the psyche of our nation and the heart of our nation. And that’s something which takes a long time if ever, to repair.”
Trump additionally highlighted Romney’s glowing remarks following their 2016 meeting, which made no mention of him seeking the Secretary of State position.
Romney announced last month he would not seek reelection to the Senate, citing his age and the need for “a new generation of leaders.”
