Three Killed in High-Speed Crash at Port of Entry on Texas-Mexico Border
Three people were killed over the weekend, including an 8-year-old girl, in a high-speed crash near a port of entry along the Texas-Mexico border that some are saying was tied to human smuggling.
The horrifying incident unfolded just after 8 a.m. on Saturday in El Paso, Texas.
An El Paso Police Department officer attempted to pull over an SUV near the Ysleta Port of Entry when the driver sped away.
Due to the high rate of speed, the officer opted to abort the chase, El Paso authorities explained in a press release
“The fleeing vehicle exited at the Zaragoza exit then ran a red light and collided with vehicles that were at the intersection. The impact was so severe one of the vehicles caught fire while the occupants were inside of the vehicle,” the statement reads.
“The driver of the fleeing vehicle attempted to leave the scene and would not comply with the officers’ commands which resulted in the officer deploying his taser on the driver of the fleeing vehicle.”
Footage of the aftermath and arrest shot by witnesses has been circulating on social media.
Three females, ages 8, 27, and 21, reportedly perished inside the burning vehicle.
Mayra Flores, wife of a Border Patrol agent and former Congresswoman from Texas, claims the suspect was a human “smuggler.”
Carlos Alejandro Martinez, a 21-year-old resident of Horizon City, TX, has been charged with three counts of murder and evading arrest/detention causing death.
