A female suspect has been charged with murder after a public bus driver was shot to death in broad daylight in Philadelphia this week, authorities say.

The horrifying incident unfolded just before 10:30 a.m. on Thursday morning in the Germantown neighborhood of the City of Brotherly Love.

A passenger stepped off a Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) bus before turning around and shooting the driver at least six times at point blank range.

Surveillance footage of the execution is circulating on social media.

The driver, 45-year-old Army veteran Bernard Gribbin, was rushed to hospital suffering from multiple gunshot wounds but was pronounced dead a short time later.

“Responding officers were provided with flash information about the offender. Plainclothes SEPTA Police stopped the offender at Greene Street and Queen Avenue for investigation; however, the firearm used was not recovered,” Philadelphia Police explained in a statement.

On Friday, the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office announced that Zhontay Capers, 21, was charged with murder, firearms violations, possession of an instrument of crime, and recklessly endangering another person.

Gribbin, who drove for SEPTA for 12 years, is survived by his wife.

An investigation is ongoing.
