SCOTUS Quotes Nancy Pelosi in Opinion Striking Down Student Debt Forgiveness
The US Supreme Court ruled Joe Biden’s plan to forgive student loan debt unconstitutional Friday, citing none other than Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in its opinion striking down the scheme.
In his majority opinion Friday, Chief Justice John Roberts quoted Pelosi’s comments to the press in 2021, where she publicly acknowledged Biden did not have the power to make the financial declaration.
Citing Pelosi, Roberts wrote:
As then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi explained: “People think that the President of the United States has the power for debt forgiveness. He does not. He can postpone. He can delay. But he does not have that power. That has to be an act of Congress.” Press Conference, Office of the Speaker of the House (July 28, 2021).
Pelosi’s comments noting the power the purse lied with Congress came in July 2021, when she was asked about the potential debt forgiveness plan.
While not noted in the SCOTUS ruling, Biden himself also compromised his campaign promise to nix student debt when he admitted to CBS 60 Minutes that the pandemic was over, the pandemic federal emergency being the impetus that originally gave the government sweeping powers in terms of student debt relief and Coronavirus aid.
No pandemic means no power for the executive branch to unilaterally forgive student loan debt.
As Twitchy notes, Democrats were aware the proposal lacked merit when it was proposed and still misled voters even after it became apparent.
“They knew the ‘student loan bailout’ push was illegal but Dems used it to get votes and now they’ll blame Republicans and a ‘MAGA Court’ for the plan going down in unconstitutional flames because they have no shame.”
