Protesters in Jordan, Turkey Descend on Israeli Embassies in Response To Gaza Hospital Attack

Protesters tried to storm the Israeli embassies in Jordan and Turkey after a purported IDF airstrike on a hospital in Gaza killed over 500 hundred people.

The Baptist al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City was reportedly hit by an Israeli airstrike late Tuesday that killed at least 500 people, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

Scores Jordanians responded by trying to overrun the Israeli embassy in Amman, but ultimately failed to breach the facility.

From Middle East Eye:

A Jordanian security source denied rumours that the protesters had managed to storm the embassy. It told Middle East Eye that the protesters had been dealt with and removed from the surroundings.

Anas Mahmoud, an eyewitness, told MEE: “A group managed to reach the checkpoint near the embassy, which is 200 meters away. Then, the public security officers arrived and dispersed them using tear gas.”

“The demonstrators retreated to the vicinity of the Kaloti Mosque, about 1km away from the Israeli embassy,” he added.

Another witness, Mohammad Othman, said: “Security forces arrested dozens of protesters. The protesters went out randomly, without any organisation from a specific party. This was a response to the Israeli massacres.”

Protesters in Ankara and Istanbul, Turkey likewise surrounded the Israeli embassy in the wake of the hospital attack.

The governments of Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and even Canada condemned the strike on the hospital as a violation of international law.

French President Emmanuel Macron called for an investigation into the hospital missile attack.

Russia and the UAE have also called for an emergency UN Security Council meeting in the wake of the hospital strike.

Iran vowed a “harsh response” in response to the hospital attack.

Lebabnon-backed jihadist group Hezbollah declared a day of ‘unprecedented anger’ over the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital attack.

Israel and the IDF denied responsibility for the attack, claiming it was the result of a failed Hamas rocket.

Notably, one of videos promoted by pro-Israel accounts attributed to Hamas was found to be footage from August 2022.

Israel’s official X account, which initially included some of the videos — quickly removed the footage from its explanation.

Here is Israel’s amended statement:

Israel’s Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Herzog also shared the video, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attributed to a failed Hamas rocket.

Israeli journalist Hananya Neftari originally claimed the IDF struck the hospital to take out a Hamas base embedded inside, but then deleted that post on X.

Last week, the World Health Organization said an Israeli order to evacuate from hospitals in Northern Gaza amounts to a “death sentence” for the citizens in the area.

The IDF on Sunday released a telephone call where a Palestinian at the Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza claimed Hamas was “taking identification cards and car keys” to prevent citizens from heading south.
