Majority of Voters Blame Biden & Democrats For Gov’t Shutdown, CNN Poll Shows

The majority of voters blame Joe Biden and the Democrats for the impending government shutdown, according to a CNN poll.

The poll shows that 39% of respondents believe Biden and the Democrats are most responsible for the government shutdown.

By contrast, only 33% blamed the GOP in Congress, and 22% said both parties were equally responsible.

“I think this one was a bit of a surprise to me given, I think, what the conventional wisdom is,” CNN reporter Harry Enten admitted on Friday.

“Actually, the plurality blame Joe Biden and the Democrats in Congress at 39%.”

The poll is significant because it shows a break in historical trends, where Republicans have been blamed for government shutdowns in the past.

“That is very different than what we’ve seen in prior shutdowns,” Enten said, noting Republicans were blamed on the government shutdowns in 1995-96, 2013, and 2018-2019.

Part of the reason voters appear to blame Biden more than Republicans for the shutdown is due to Biden’s unwillingness to negotiate with Republicans on a continuing resolution to continue funding the government.

Nevertheless Biden has been casting blame for the looming shutdown on Republicans.

The House is scheduled to vote Saturday on a 45-day “clean” stopgap funding bill that won’t include funding for Ukraine or border policy changes ahead of a midnight shutdown deadline.
