House Votes to Censure Democrat Rep. Adam Schiff Over Trump Era Probe

The US House of Representatives passed a resolution Wednesday to censure Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) on the grounds the congressman knowingly misled the public when he launched a political witch hunt against former President Donald Trump.

The measure passed 213 to 209 following its failure last week, after the bill’s author Rep. Paula Luna (R-Fla.) revised it to strike a provision that would have fined Schiff $16 million.

Rep. Paulina’s motion “accuses Schiff of misleading the American people while pursuing the congressional investigation into Russia and the Trump campaign as the then-chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and for actions Schiff took leading up to the former president’s first impeachment,” begrudgingly reports CNN.

Paulina announced on Twitter Tuesday she’d secured the number of votes to successfully pass the resolution, thanking colleagues for helping her amend the proposal.

Republican congressman Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), who had previously voted against the measure on the basis it possibly violated the 8th and 27th Amendments, told CNN he was “in favor of the new version and is assisting Luna in her whip effort.”

Luna’s resolution came on the heels of Special Counsel John Durham’s final report last month into the FBI’s mishandling of the Trump-Russia collusion probe, which concluded the Department of Justice conspired with the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Obama White House to frame Donald Trump with a phony narrative that he “colluded” with Russia to steal the 2016 presidential election.

Rep. Luna kicked off comments regarding the resolution on the House floor Wednesday, with fellow Republicans following her lead.

“Adam Schiff abused his position as Chair of Intel to lie and lead America through a national nightmare with the fake Russia collusion narrative,” stated House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

“As Speaker, I removed him from the Intel Committee, and now the full House will vote to censure him and open an ethics investigation.”

The House Ethics Committee will now open an investigation into Schiff’s egregious misconduct and present their findings to the House, which will then decide on what actions should be taken, if any, against Schiff.

It also remains to be seen how the censure will affect Rep. Schiff’s bid for the California Senate seat long held by Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein.
