France: Good Samaritan Thrown Onto Train Tracks by Foreign Robbery Suspect

A man who attempted to stop a fleeing thief was shoved onto train tracks and nearly run over by a tram in France last week, according to reports.

The harrowing incident unfolded on June 22 in Nantes, a large city in the department of Loire-Atlantique.

A suspect grabbed a woman’s glasses near a tram stop in the Jonelière sector and took off running, Actu reports.

A male bystander gave chase to the mugger, but during the pursuit, the suspect turned and attacked the Good Samaritan, throwing him onto a streetcar track.

“The man falls as a tram arrives, but fortunately the tram stops in time,” a police source said.

The suspect again attempted to flee the scene, but two more witnesses pursued him and helped police locate and arrest him.

“The man was arrested for ‘attempted robbery with violence and aggravated violence,’” Actu reports.

“In addition, the individual is subject to a procedure of ‘verification of right of residence.’”

The suspect’s immigration status is unclear.

An investigation is ongoing.
