CBS Blasted After Blurring Face of Black Murder Suspect
CBS is at the center of controversy after the network blurred the face of a black murder suspect, with many on social media pointing out they didn’t offer a white murder suspect the same veil of anonymity.
On Thursday, police apprehended Brian Dowling, an 18-year-old homicide suspect facing murder charges in connection with the fatal stabbing of left-wing activist Ryan Carson.
CBS New York reported as police arrested Dowling, however viewers noted the network’s hypocrisy in blurring the suspect’s face, a gesture that was not afforded to white murder suspect Daniel Penny just earlier this year.
Penny’s case of course was different from Dowling’s in that the victim Penny choked out in the subway was threatening riders and may have gone on to assault others.
The two-tiered reporting immediately sparked controversy online, with many accusing the network of inadvertently displaying their bias and perpetuating division.
Some pointed out CBS’ blurring of Dowling’s face was pointless as his face was visible in surveillance footage of his alleged murder.
Information Liberation reporter Chris Menahan highlighted how CBS follows guidelines from the Poynter Institute on how to craft racial narratives, which tell “media outlets to avoid ‘amplifying narratives that connect Black and brown communities to crime.’”
