A biological male was crowned Miss Universe Netherlands 2023 for the first time and will compete in the upcoming Miss Universe competition in El Salvador.
22-year-old Dutch-Moluccan transgender model Rikkie Valerie Kolle beat out 10 other female contestants on Saturday at the AFAS Theater in Leusden.

The new Miss Universe Netherlands made history as she became the first-ever transgender woman to win the national title. She is also only the second transgender person to have participated in the prestigious Miss Universe pageant. The trailblazer before her was Spain’s Angela Ponce, who made history in 2018.

The Miss Universe Organization was bought up by Thai transgender media tycoon Jakapong “Anne” Jakrajutatip in 2022, who pledged to allow LGBTQ and transgender individuals to participate.
“I don’t call Miss Universe a beauty pageant anymore. I call it a women’s empowerment competition,” Jakrajutatip had said without a hint of irony.
