Decolonizing STEM

Published

on

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are too White, so they need to be “decolonized,” according to the DEI fanatics.

How to do that?

Well, there are many ways. The obvious way would be to do a better job teaching STEM subjects to students during their K-12 educations, but it is well established that schools aren’t particularly good at doing this. Achievement levels for some minority students are appallingly low in primary education, and minority students are enrolling in colleges unprepared to succeed in demanding subjects or, oftentimes, in any subject at all.

Kids are passed along without having learned what they need in an effort to make graduation rates look better and of course, in an effort to prove that schools are racially sensitive.

Another way is to redefine the subjects–essentially create new standards that drop ideas like “truth,” “accuracy,” “precision,” and other similar concepts because they are “White Supremacist.”

A third, even more direct way to overcome racial disparities in achievement and hiring is the brute force approach: simply exclude applicants who are White and male because there are too many of them.

It is this third approach that the University of Waterloo in Canada has chosen: only hire the “right” kind of people.

I’m not quite sure what the hiring laws in Canada are, but I am very sure that I don’t want to live in a world where vital technologies are developed by people chosen based on their being “diverse.”

Competence, please.

The David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science in the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo invites applications for two tenured faculty positions.

Exceptional scholars and researchers at the rank of Full Professor or Associate Professor are sought who are eligible to apply for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC), established by the Government of Canada to enable Canadian universities to foster research excellence. Priority research areas include:

Position 1, allareas of artificial intelligence. The call is open only to qualified individuals who self-identify as women, transgender, gender-fluid, non-binary, or Two-spirit.

Position 2,all areas of computer science. The call is open only to qualified individuals who self-identify as a member of a racialized minority.

That bolding is not mine but rather the university’s. They REALLY, REALLY want applicants to know that they want only certain kinds of candidates.

It’s fascinating that the requirements are so granular–one is for the genderqueer crowd, and the other is for only certain races. I can guarantee you that “identify as a woman” doesn’t include natal females, only the people who leak gender fluid.

We are far past the point where there is any pretense about what the Establishment is trying to do and that their standards have nothing to do with the quality of the applicants but instead only their identity matters.

Why pretend, I guess?

In a way, that is good, I suppose. Let’s get all our cards on the table rather than pretend anymore. Western society has to decide whether qualifications matter or whether everything comes down to “equity.” We all know what the Elite think; do we want to let them get away with it?

Assuming, of course, that we get any say any more. People like you and me have very little influence over these institutions, although many positions such as these are funded by the government, as is the case here.

It’s one thing to have this idiocy play out in computer science, which is bad enough. But it’s another issue entirely when engineers, pilots, and mathematicians also get hired based on totally irrelevant factors such as skin color, sexual preferences, or identity.

If a Black or even genderqueer person is best qualified to design a building or a bridge, fine. If they aren’t, keep them away from anything that impacts my very life.

Alas, “equity” means equality of outcome, not opportunity. Soon enough, the requirement that already exists at the FAA to hire people with mental development problems—read low intelligence–will be extended to every aspect of life.

It will be called “justice,” and as your plane flies into the ground or that bridge collapses, you can feel good that the people who made it happen were of the “right” sex, gender identity, or skin color.

You can die happy.
