CNN Claims 2024 a ‘Toxic Campaign’ Because Trump Too Dominant
A CNN op/ed claims the 2024 presidential race is a “toxic campaign” because Donald Trump is too dominant in the GOP field.
The piece highlights the establishment’s concern that no GOP contender – not even Fla. Gov. DeSantis – can thwart Trump in the primaries.
“The raucous [Trump] event in Pickens [South Carolina] also showed the enduring power of his personality and feral political appeal to GOP base voters,” says CNN’s Stephen Collinson. “And, coupled with his lead in primary polling, it should be a warning to Democrats that the most disruptive president in modern history has a realistic chance of a White House reprise that would likely be even more tumultuous than his first term.”
The op/ed also pointed out that the DeSantis campaign believes they are “way behind.”
“Even a high-profile supporter of Trump’s strongest primary rival described Trump as the ‘runaway front-runner,’” Collinson added. “Steve Cortes, the spokesman for a pro-DeSantis super PAC, admitted the Florida governor was ‘way behind’ in a stark assessment of a campaign that has yet to show DeSantis has national appeal.”
Given how massively successful the Pickens rally was for Trump, it’s likely the DeSantis campaign is irrevocably damaged, especially given how the governor received endorsements from numerous establishment Republicans who are not in tune with the average GOP voter, which there were plenty of in Pickens.
Ironically, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) might have given Trump more of a challenge back in 2016 than DeSantis will be able to mount – and, as the establishment gets more desperate about Trump’s dominance, they will likely bolster DeSantis even though that will just help Trump even further.
