Breaking: Smoke Fills DC Metro Station, Fire Crews Investigate Cause
Shocking footage out of Washington, DC, shows the moment smoke began filling the Eastern Market metro station on Thursday, with initial reports blaming a derailment or some type of explosion.
WUSA9 reports:
Posts on social media initially reported an explosion, but the fire department said no explosion took place. A spokesperson for DC Fire and EMS said they are still investigating the cause of the smoke.
DC Councilman Charles Allen told WUSA9 that there was no train derailment.
A Metro rider who was on the train told WUSA9 that as soon as the train got into the tunnel leaving Stadium Armory, riders heard a very loud pop that startled them. The pops continued a few more times during the ride.
Video circulating on social media showed smoke coming out of the ceiling filling the metro station subway terminal, with one witness who filmed the incident saying he saw “explosions and fire.”
Another post on X claimed witnesses heard loud “bangs” as a train slowed to a halt.
An X post from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority warned commuters about suspended terminal activity “due to fire department activity.”
There’s currently no official word on the cause of the smoke or the heavy police response.
WUSA9 reports the incident follows an NTSB report last month blasting the DC Metro’s “poor safety culture.”
The Eastern Market metro station appears to be about 3.5 miles from the White House.
