Lahaina Hit With ‘Massive Homeless Crisis’ After Biden FEMA Housing Incentive Program Goes Awry
Renters in West Maui and Lahaina are reportedly being evicted by landlords who are taking advantage of a FEMA assistance program rewarding them for housing wildfire victims, prompting residents left without homes to take shelter in tents.
Journalist Nick Sortor recently highlighted the issue on X by sharing photos of tents that have gone up in Lahaina, warning FEMA’s Direct Lease Program has “created a massive homeless crisis” by offering landlords up to 175% above market rate for their rentals, incentivizing evictions and non-renewal of leases.
Sortor wrote:
THE BIDEN ADMIN HAS CREATED A MASSIVE HOMELESS CRISIS ON MAUI
West Maui & Lahaina residents are literally being FORCED out of their homes and into LITERAL ROADSIDE TENTS due to Biden’s FEMA.
Because FEMA’s housing efforts have been a TOTAL failure, they’ve now resulted to coercing landlords to EVICT their current tenants and replace them with FEMA tenants.
FEMA has driven rent prices THROUGH THE ROOF, causing housing to become unaffordable to the masses, as FEMA is paying at LEAST 130% above market rates.
Meanwhile, short term rentals sit vacant.
Many of these newly displaced residents have lost their jobs due to the fire anyway, so their only choices are to be homeless or move off the island. They’re receiving absolutely ZERO aid whatsoever.
WHERE IS JOE BIDEN?
Sortor documented helping a friend who’s leaving the island due to housing issues move his belongings into a shipping container.
Hawaii News Now also reported on the issue this week, saying FEMA’s program was having “unintended consequences,” with families fearing skyrocketing housing prices could lead to even more homelessness in the area.
Social media posts are also popping up from displaced wildfire victims who’ve been struggling to navigate housing issues with FEMA and the Red Cross.
For its part, FEMA has released a statement saying it’s “not allowable” for renters to evict current tenants, and that property owners who do this would not be accepted to the program.
Meanwhile, Hawaii’s Democrat Gov. Josh Green has threatened to ban vacation rentals in West Maui if displaced wildfire victims can’t find housing.
“If not enough partners step forward to join us as we approach March 1st, I will be forced to declare a moratorium on all short-term rentals in West Maui, until we find enough housing for the displaced families,” Green said during his State of the State address last week.
“There are 27,000 short-term rental units on Maui alone, and — if we can dedicate just 10% of these homes to displaced Lahaina families — we can house them all.”
The situation is a mess and the federal government doesn’t appear to be making it any better.
