Wild Video: Train Passes Through Fiery Explosion After Big Rig Slams Into Bridge in New York
A freight train was caught in an inferno after a truck hauling fuel crashed into a bridge and exploded this week in New York, according to reports.
The incident unfolded just after 6:30 p.m. on Thursday in Glenville, a town approximately 30 miles northwest of Albany.
A big rig believed to be transporting compressed gas in containers slammed into a low overpass after the driver failed to see height warnings, authorities say.
Ensuing shockwaves were felt up to 20 miles away and flames shot as high as 200 feet in the air, according to the Daily Gazette.
Footage taken by witnesses has been circulating on social media.
A train passing directly through the inferno did not stop and no damage was reported as of Friday morning.
âI would assume with the ⌠amount of fire that was here, that the train was probably engulfed,â said Glenville Police Chief Stephen Janik.
Fire crews managed to bring the blaze under control within hours.
âThe driver, identified late Thursday as 60-year-old Sylvester Basil Jr., of Clute, Texas, suffered third-degree burns on his hands and face. He was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center for treatment,â the Daily Gazette reports.
Additionally, three people were injured when a fire chief from a neighboring town struck their vehicle while racing to the scene.
Multiple overpass crashes have reportedly taken place in Glenville recently.
âWeâve got to get the state and the county together, and weâve got to address this issue,â said Glenville Supervisor Chris Koetzle
âThis is a very dangerous area. Tonight, this just highlights that.â
