What? John Fetterman and Katie Hobbs Are Concerned About the Border?

The Biden Border Rush has gotten so bad, even Democrats are noticing. And I mean high-level Democrats.

John Fetterman, for example. Yes, that John Fetterman, the U.S. senator from Pennsylvania known for wearing a hoodie and shorts in the Capitol.

Sen. Fetterman encourages his fellow Democrats to negotiate with Republicans on border security.

“I hope Democrats can understand that it isn’t xenophobic to be concerned about the border. It’s a reasonable conversation, and Democrats should engage,” Fetterman said.

He pointed out that Customs and Border Protection reported nearly 270,000 border encounters in September.

“Honestly, it’s astonishing. And this isn’t a Fox News kind of statistic. This is the government’s. You essentially have Pittsburgh showing up there at the border,” Fetterman asserted.

Don’t get too excited. This doesn’t mean that Sen. Fetterman shares all the opinions of immigration restrictionists. Don’t expect him as a columnist on Border Hawk any time soon.

It just means that Fetterman is a Democrat who is making a few reasonable statements about border security, which sets him apart from supporters of the Biden administration’s practices and policies. Fetterman recognizes there is a problem on the border.

On social media, Fetterman caught some flak for “throwing his wife under the bus” because his wife Gisele is an immigrant from Brazil.

Democrat Alexandra Hunt, also of Pennsylvania, declared on X that “Fetterman has never been progressive but endorsing talks for tougher immigration laws when he’s married to an incredible woman who was once an illegal immigrant and who kept his campaign alive while he was recovering from a stroke is actually sickening.”

But that doesn’t really follow. Sen. Fetterman wanting border security is not incompatible with having a wife who is an immigrant. It’s another example of how everything has to be personalized in today’s political climate.

I myself have a wife who is an immigrant from Mexico. She is now a naturalized U.S. citizen. And I don’t plan to stop writing about the topic.

Meanwhile, in the border state of Arizona, Democrat Governor Katie Hobbs is concerned about the border and is now taking action.

On December 8, Gov. Hobbs sent a letter to “The Honorable Joseph R. Biden, President of the United States” with an “Urgent Request Regarding our Southern Border.”

“For far too long, Arizona has continued to bear the burden of federal inaction in managing our southern border,” she wrote.

Governor Hobbs even asked Uncle Joe for money: “[D]ue to the federal government’s failure to secure our border, the state of Arizona has spent $512,529,333 on border operations including migrant transportation, drug interdiction, and law enforcement. Pursuant to Section 26-105(E) of the Arizona Revised Statues, I am requesting the federal government reimburse the state for these expenses.”

On December 15, Gov. Hobbs ordered the National Guard to the border.

In a related statement, Governor Hobbs declared, “With this Executive Order, I am taking action where the federal government won’t. But we can’t stand alone, Arizona needs resources and manpower to reopen the Lukeville crossing, manage the flow of migrants, and maintain a secure, orderly and humane border. Despite continued requests for assistance, the Biden administration has refused to deliver desperately needed resources to Arizona’s border.”

If Democrats at the level of Senator John Fetterman and Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs recognize the problems on the border and want to fix them, what about everyday Democrat voters? Don’t some of them want the border fixed?

As a matter of fact, yes.

A recent Siena College poll found that 85% of Republicans in New York think that the recent migrant influx to that state is a serious issue while 75% of Democrats do, as well. That’s pretty close.

And nationwide, Real Clear Politics findings from four separate polls indicate that 63.3% disapprove of Biden’s handling of the border. That includes some Democrats.

Could a presidential candidate take advantage of that disapproval in the upcoming election?

Just asking.
