Lawmaker Fails to Stop Federal Mandate That Requires All Vehicles Sold After 2026 Be Equipped With a KILL SWITCH
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has raised the alarm that he failed to stop a federal mandate that would require all vehicles sold after 2026 to be equipped with a kill switch.
On Tuesday, Massie made his case to defund Section 24220 of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, going so far as to call the act straight out of a âdystopian science fiction.â
âI rise in support of my amendment, which states: âNone of the funds made available by this act may be used to implement Section 24220 of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.,’â said Massie. âMy amendment is simple. It will defund the federal mandate that requires all new vehicles after 2026 to be equipped with a kill switch that can disable a vehicle if the vehicle has monitored the driverâs performance, and that the vehicle determines that the driver is not performing well.â
âItâs so incredible, that I have to offer this amendment. It almost sounds like the domain of science fiction, dystopian science fiction, that the federal government would put a kill switch in vehicles that would be the judge, the jury, and the executioner on such a fundamental right as the right to travel freely. But here we are.â

On Wednesday morning, Massie highlighted alarming parts of Section 24220 that specifically states the âAdvanced Drunk and Impaired Driving Prevention Technologyâ is able to âprevent or limit motor vehicle operation.â
Social media users slammed the Republicans for voting against Massieâs amendment that would have defunded the kill switch.
â19 Republicans joined 210 Democrats to make sure we get kill switches in our vehicles,â said X user Oilfield Rando. âBut remember, Trump is the only reason people wonât show up for the GOP.â
