Iran Warns It Will Intervene If Israel Launches Ground Offensive in Gaza

Iran warned Israel through the United Nations that it will intervene if Israel’s operation in Gaza continues.

Iran told the UN that it does not want to see Israel’s conflict with Hamas escalate into a wider regional war, according to diplomatic sources.

From Axios:

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian met with UN envoy to the Middle East Tor Wennesland on Saturday in Beirut, the two diplomatic sources said. Wennesland urged Amir-Abdollahian to help prevent a spillover of the conflict in Gaza and Israel to the wider region in the Middle East.

The Iranian foreign minister replied that Iran doesn’t want the conflict to turn into a regional war and wants to try to help with the release of civilians who are being held hostage by Hamas in Gaza.

But Amir-Abdollahian stressed that Iran has its red lines. He said that if the Israeli military operation continues — and especially if Israel follows through on its promise of a ground offensive in Gaza — Iran will have to respond, according to the sources.

Amir-Abdollahian also reportedly met with Lebanon-backed Hezbollah leadership and warned that Israel must “stop the crimes against civilians in Gaza — because it might be too late in a few hours.”

“I know about the scenarios that Hezbollah has put in place,” Amir-Abdollahian said. “Any step the resistance will take will cause a huge earthquake” for Israel.

This comes as the Biden administration sent two contingents of aircraft carrier groups into the region Saturday in an effort to deter Iran and Hezbollah from joining the war.

Israel has cut off electricity, food and water to Gaza ahead of a planned siege of the Palestinian territory that’s resulted in a “complete catastrophe” of living conditions in the area.

Israel has ordered over a million Palestinians residing in northern Gaza to evacuate as it prepares its next stages of the war, which include “combined and coordinated strikes from the air, sea and land.”

“We will commence significant military operations only once we see that civilians have left the area,” Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus told CNN Sunday. “I cannot stress more than enough to say now is the time for Gazans to leave.”
