Conflict of Interest? Maui Police Chief Who Oversaw Emergency Response at Vegas Mass Shooting Also Serves as Maui Coroner!
Commenters on social media are raising eyebrows after learning the police chief in Maui, John Pelletier – who previously worked as incident commander during the Las Vegas massacre – also serves as the island’s coroner.
The bizarre coincidence came to light last week as Chief Pelletier in a seemingly off-handed remark mentioned he’s also the coroner during a press conference update on the Lahaina, Hawaii, wildfires, where the current death toll stands at 115.
The comment was immediately flagged by social media users who expressed concerns over potential conflicts of interest and a lack of transparency as many believe officials might be deliberately withholding information, possibly to conceal a significantly higher death toll which could potentially include hundreds of children.

Trepidation over the chief’s freshly revealed role dealing with dead wildfire victims comes as Maui Mayor Richard Bissen stirred controversy last week when he threatened to end a press conference after a reporter asked him for an estimate of the number of children who perished in the fire.
Many also have reservations over Chief Pelletier after it surfaced last week he served as the Las Vegas Police Department Incident Commander and coordinated the emergency response during the mass shooting that unfolded in October 2017 at the Mandalay Bay Route 91 Harvest music festival.
According to Hawaii law, a county’s chief of police serves as coroner if there’s no medical examiner. A new bill “relating to coroners,” HB869, introduced in Jan. 2023 and still making its way through the state legislature, would require city leaders to appoint a medical examiner who would also serve as coroner.
Clearly the public is skeptical over the government’s response and just want answers for the scores of dead victims still missing nearly two weeks after the deadly tragedy.
